The Quintessential American Pipe - Kaywoodie

The CORPS - celebrating the American pipe - asked what better brand than one founded here more than 100 years ago? Of course - Kaywoodie! We "found" a shape 79 (probably from the late 1940s) and said "What better shape?" Classic bowl, more shank for your money! We plan to have these ready for smoking at the Expo, but order them now so that you’ll be assured one of them!

Our idea was to have a pipe that most of our members would want to smoke (quality, size, shape), and for it to be affordable. Bill dictated that it must be quality briar, and be executed superbly (as we know that Bill and Kaywoodie will do). See the specs below, as well as the great prices, on the enclosed order form. It will be close in size to a classic shape 79, but a little larger! So, you’ll get a great smoking pipe, made by Kaywoodie, at a great price, and a pipe that will be a proud part of your collection! They will be marked as Kaywoodies, and with the CORPS logo!

The majority of the pipes will be a tan sandblast; some will be brown stained, and a few will be black/burgundy stained. Almost all will be sandblast. There may be a very few smooths - the best of the best will be auctioned at our silent auction during the Expo.

In discussing the design of the pipes, Bill said "I'll plan to make as many tanblasts as possible, with the remainder being dark brown and maybe dark burgundy. We’re working on the premise that this is great old briar, and that there will be a few smooth finish pipes. We’re cutting/selecting for straight grain, but maybe our pipemakers will recognize a block or two that will be wonderful cross-grain - and if so, we will use it!"

To summarize the target dimensions for the pipe:

• Overall Length, Including Stem: 6 3/4'' to 7 1/3''
• Shank Length: 2 3/4'' to 3 1/4''
• Shank Diameter, 15mm at stem, 17mm at bowl
• Stem Length: ~ 2''
• Canted Bowl ~ 3 degrees - yes, the way a billiard/lovat is supposed to be!
• Bowl Height: 2 1/8''
• Bowl Diameter: 1.60'' right above shank, 1.4'' at rim
• Tobacco Chamber Diameter: .80''
• Wall Thickness at Rim: 7.5mm - .30''

Keep in mind, these are pre-sandblast dimensions, so everything is going to be a little bit smaller after blasting, with bowl diameter and shank diameter being affected, maybe 1mm smaller in the diameter measurements of the bowl and shank. And, if there are a few that are a little smaller, but are exceptional pieces, we asked Bill to send them anyway - as a few of us blokes might want a smaller pipe - you know, for carrying purposes, or to round out the collection in addition to the regular size.
